I would like to relay my complete frustration with our lawmakers over the drafting of Senate bills 1110, 1115, 1116, 1117, and 1118. This legislation would grant legal and economic immunity to doctors, hospitals and their insurance companies. If passed into law, negligent doctors would get a free pass and would not be accountable for their actions.
We all have had personal, first hand experience with doctors who made the wrong decisions about the care and treatment of their patients. We have watched as those closest to us have suffered the consequences of such malpractices, such as job loss, financial distress and/or bankruptcy due to overwhelming medical expenses, strife within the family, etc., sometimes lasting for many years or a lifetime.
What other industry would be provided such immunity?
I am dismayed that the government would venture to restrict the rights of Michigan citizens by limiting their ability to file lawsuits, or receive a judgment in their favor, against negligent doctors and/or medical professionals. This essentially removes the judicial checks and balance system of our state.
Time is critical – they plan to vote on these measures early next week. Please take a moment to google and review these bills, http://www.legislature.mi.gov. Encourage your state senator to vote against these bills. Michigan citizens should not have their rights to justice infringed upon.
