New Milk Message

Got kids?   Then you've probably "Got milk"  in your refrigerator,  but how much should they drink?

A new study published in the  journal Pediatrics  followed more than 13-hundred children  between the ages of 2 and 5, tracking the amount of cow's milk  they drank each day.

Researchers used blood samples  to measure Vitamin D and iron levels.  Parents were also asked about vitamin D  and iron supplementation,  time spent outside,  skin pigmentation,  body mass index  and bottle use.

The conclusion?  About two cups of milk per day  will maintain adequate vitamin D levels  in most children,  but any more than that  may cause another problem.   The study found  while milk increases vitamin D,  too much can decrease iron levels.

The research also showed  children with darker skin pigmentation  need up to four cups in the winter months  to maintain good Vitamin D levels.

As always,  speak to your family doctor  if you have questions  about what's right for your children.
